The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has announced the appointment of Dr. Emmanuel Agu, a distinguished marketing leader, as the new Chairman of the Advertising Standards Panel (ASP), effective July 3, 2024.

This significant announcement, made by Winifred Akpan, Head of Corporate Affairs for ARCON, marks a pivotal moment for the regulatory body as it aims to uphold and enhance advertising standards across Nigeria. Dr. Agu succeeds Mrs. Omowunmi Owodunni, bringing a wealth of academic and professional expertise to the role.
About Dr. Emmanuel Agu
Dr. Agu holds a Ph.D. in Marketing with a specialization in Marketing Communication from Babcock University. His impressive academic background also includes an M.Sc. in Media & Marketing Communication from Pan-Atlantic University, an MBA in Marketing Management from Lagos State University, and a B.Tech (Hons.) in Agricultural Economics & Extension from the Federal University of Technology (FUTO), Owerri.
Role of the Advertising Standards Panel
The Advertising Standards Panel, established by Section 55 of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria Act No. 23 of 2022, plays a crucial role in ensuring that advertisements conform to the prevailing laws of the Federation and adhere to the Code of Ethics of the advertising profession. Dr. Agu’s appointment is expected to infuse fresh perspectives and strengthen the panel’s efforts in maintaining high standards within Nigeria’s advertising landscape.
Industry Support
The announcement also highlighted the involvement of 17 other stakeholders, including various advertising associations, media bodies, and government agencies. Each organization will be represented on the ASP, with Dr. Agu leading the charge to perform the responsibilities of an advertising clearing house in line with the law.
Dr. Agu’s Professional Journey
Industry insiders have welcomed Dr. Agu’s appointment, citing his extensive experience in the marketing field as a valuable asset for the panel. His career spans nearly two decades across consulting, banking, and FMCGs. Notably, he has managed and directed renowned brands such as Goldberg, Life Beer, “33” Export, Legend Extra Stout, La Casera Apple drink, and Nirvana Range of Water.
Dr. Agu began his career with Ernst and Young as a staff accountant before moving into banking operations at ACB International Bank Plc. He later joined Guinness Nigeria Plc as a management trainee in 2002, eventually rising to Senior Management as Marketing Manager. In 2013, he joined Nigerian Breweries Plc, where he served in various leadership roles, including Marketing Manager for Gulder, Legend Extra Stout, and Life Continental Lager Beer. By 2018, he was leading the marketing team at Jotna Nigeria Limited as Group Marketing Director.

Throughout his career, Dr. Agu has demonstrated a keen ability to drive brand growth, develop innovative marketing strategies, and lead high-performing teams. His expertise has earned him prestigious recognition as a fellow with the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN) and the Institute of Management Consultants (IMC).
