Meta has ended its celebrity AI chatbots to prioritize AI Studio, a new tool for creating personalized AI characters. Learn more about this strategic shift!

Meta has recently decided to shut down its celebrity AI chatbots, which were initially introduced as a major feature at its Connect event last September. These chatbots, which allowed users to interact with digital versions of celebrities, are no longer available. This decision marks a shift in Meta’s strategy towards a more user-centric approach in the AI space.

According to a report by The Information, the company has decided to discontinue these celebrity-based chatbots as it pivots towards a new initiative: AI Studio. This tool, launched on Monday, provides creators in the US with the ability to craft AI chatbots of their own, focusing on more personalized and versatile applications compared to the high-profile celebrity personas.

Meta’s spokesperson, Liz Sweeney, explained the change, stating, “You can no longer interact with AI characters embodied by celebrities. We took a lot of learnings from building them and Meta AI to understand how people can use AIs to connect and create in unique ways. AI Studio is an evolution, creating a space for anyone including people, creators, and celebrities to create their own AI.”

The celebrity chatbots featured alternate personas for various well-known figures, including Charli D’Amelio’s alter-ego Coco, described as a “dance enthusiast,” Dwyane Wade’s Victor, an “Ironman triathlete motivating you to be your best self,” and Paris Hilton’s Amber, a “detective partner for solving whodunnits.” Although Meta had plans to expand this list with bots based on personalities like Bear Grylls, Chloe Kim, and Josh Richards, those additions never materialized.

The discontinuation of these celebrity AI bots follows reports that Meta invested significantly in acquiring the likenesses of these celebrities. Despite the high-profile nature of the initial rollout, the company has decided to redirect its focus towards AI Studio, which aims to empower a broader range of users to create their own unique AI experiences.

While the celebrity chatbots did not meet Meta’s expectations, the company continues to invest heavily in AI technologies. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has emphasized the potential of AI chatbots in several discussions, and Meta has integrated its Meta AI assistant into various platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, signaling its ongoing commitment to AI development.
