Big brands have budgets for billboards, TV and celebrity ambassadors. Most African businesses don’t. The good news is that a strong brand has less to do with spending than people think.
Be clear about one thing. Small brands that try to stand for everything stand for nothing. Pick the one reason customers should choose you, whether that’s speed, price, quality or service, and say it everywhere.
Look the same every time. Same logo, same colours, same tone on your packaging, your Instagram, your delivery bike and your invoices. Consistency is what makes a small brand look established.
Turn customers into the advertising. Ask happy customers for reviews. Share their photos, with permission. Word of mouth still drives buying decisions across the continent, and it’s free.
Show up in your community. Sponsor a local football team, run a stall at a market day, partner with a business next door. Being known in your area beats being unknown everywhere.
Sweat the small moments. A thank you note in the package. A delivery that arrives when promised. A real person answering the phone. These are the things people tell their friends about.
Then spend money only where it multiplies what’s already working. Ads amplify a good brand. They can’t create one.
