Meta’s Threads app has reached 200 million active users. Learn about its rapid growth, future potential, and current challenges compared to rivals like X.

Meta’s Threads app has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 200 million active users, as confirmed by Meta executive Adam Mosseri. This achievement comes just a day after Mark Zuckerberg hinted during the company’s latest earnings call that Threads was nearing this landmark.

Though Threads remains smaller compared to Meta’s more established apps, its growth trajectory has been notably rapid. Just last month, on the occasion of Threads’ first anniversary, Zuckerberg announced the app had 175 million users. He has previously speculated that Threads could evolve into Meta’s next app to reach one billion users.

“We’ve been building this company for 20 years, and there aren’t many opportunities to create a billion-person app,” Zuckerberg remarked. “There’s a lot of work ahead to reach that goal.”

For Meta, expanding Threads’ user base is crucial for future monetization. The app currently lacks advertisements or a clear business model. Zuckerberg explained that scaling new products involves a multi-year process from initial launch to becoming substantial revenue generators.

Threads has gained traction amid the turmoil surrounding X, but Meta is still navigating its positioning of the app as a viable alternative. Both Mosseri and Zuckerberg have emphasized their intention for Threads not to promote political content to users unless explicitly requested. This stance has even sparked discussions among Meta employees, as reported by The Information.

Another challenge for Threads is its algorithm’s lag in updating with breaking news and current events. Mosseri has acknowledged this issue, stating, “We’re definitely not fast enough yet, and we’re actively working to get better there.”
