Expect flight disruptions at several South African airports due to an ongoing air navigation compliance review. Learn more about the affected airports and what this means for your travel plans.
South African airports are facing potential flight disruptions due to an ongoing air navigation compliance review process. The Air Traffic Navigation Service (ATNS) has notified aircraft operators that instrument-navigation flight approaches to George, Kimberley, Mthatha, Polokwane, and Richards Bay airports have been indefinitely suspended. This suspension affects all flights to these airports, as stated by Airlink.
The suspended approaches, originally designed and approved by ATNS, are under review as part of a compliance check on South Africa’s air navigation infrastructure. This review is taking longer than anticipated. During the suspension, pilots can perform visual approaches in favorable weather but might face challenges at night or in poor weather conditions.
ATNS has also issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) indicating that some flight approaches to OR Tambo International, Cape Town International, Bloemfontein, Upington, Pietermaritzburg, and East London airports are also suspended. The procedures being reviewed adhere to South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) design criteria, which are periodically updated to incorporate technological advancements.
ATNS spokesperson Percy Morokane assured that efforts are being made to expedite the review process to minimize safety and operational delays. The ongoing maintenance program is progressing well, with a positive outcome anticipated.
ATNS is committed to ensuring the highest standards of air traffic services and minimizing the impact on daily operations and flight schedules.
