Discover Ghana’s ambitious plan to launch affordable 5G mobile broadband services nationwide by 2024. Learn how NGIC, in collaboration with Radisys and other partners, aims to revolutionize the country’s digital landscape.
In a pioneering initiative, the Ghanaian government, alongside Radisys Corporation under Reliance Industries Limited, led by Mukesh Ambani, plans to introduce affordable 5G mobile broadband services nationwide by the end of 2024. This ambitious project will be spearheaded by the Next-Gen Infrastructure Company (NGIC).
Harkirit Singh, executive director of NGIC, announced a substantial $145 million investment in Ghana’s infrastructure over the next three years. Radisys Corp will provide critical network infrastructure, applications, and smartphones, positioning NGIC as Ghana’s first 5G mobile broadband shared infrastructure entity to establish a nationwide 4G/5G network.
Joining Radisys Corporation are other key partners including Nokia, Tech Mahindra Ltd, and Microsoft Corporation. This strategic alliance aligns with Ghana’s digital vision, highlighted by Minister of Communication and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful’s recent announcement to launch 5G mobile technology in September 2024.
Owusu-Ekuful emphasized the importance of establishing a shared 5G Mobile Broadband Infrastructure, stating, “The creation of NGIC as a neutral, shared platform accessible to all mobile network operators and tower companies will help rapidly expand 5G services across Ghana.” She also expressed aspirations to replicate India’s success in digital infrastructure and affordable mobile data usage.
NGIC, granted a ten-year license with potential for a 15-year extension to provide 5G services in Ghana, is jointly owned by stakeholders. African telecom companies Ascend Digital Solutions Ltd. and K-NET hold a 55% stake, with the Ghanaian government owning 10%, and the remainder held by local mobile operators and private investors.
Rather than serving customers directly, NGIC will provide 5G broadband services to Ghana’s mobile operators and internet service providers (ISPs), ensuring widespread access to high-speed data connectivity.
With a population of over 33 million and nearly 24.06 million Internet users, Ghana’s telecommunications landscape is dominated by MTN Ghana, Vodafone Ghana, and state-run AT Ghana (formerly AirtelTigo).
This strategic partnership and investment are set to transform Ghana’s digital landscape, offering affordable access to cutting-edge 5G technology. By leveraging global industry expertise and fostering collaboration, the Ghanaian government aims to realize its digital vision, bridging the digital divide and empowering citizens and businesses with high-speed connectivity.
