The Gauteng province has officially launched its e-Panic Button app, following a trial phase that began in May 2023. Contrary to some expectations, the app is receiving positive reviews from users on both Android and iOS platforms. Designed to combat crime and domestic violence issues in South Africa, the e-Panic Button app allows residents to request immediate assistance from emergency services or armed response teams. To start using the e-Panic Button app, users need to complete a registration process involving the submission of personal information. While this setup process is relatively straightforward, it’s advisable to register the app in advance rather than in the middle of a high-pressure situation.

Here’s how to get started: download the app onto your smartphone or tablet, open it, and enter your phone number. You’ll receive a one-time pin (OTP) via SMS, which you should enter to proceed. The next step involves providing your name, surname, and optionally an email address. You will also need to accept the terms and conditions and grant the app access to your location and motion permissions for it to function effectively.

The app offers three main features to assist users:

  1. Report a Crime: Users can select the type of crime, provide a description, and upload images before sending the report to the relevant authorities.
  2. Medical Emergencies: This feature allows users to send a distress signal and their location to Gauteng eGovernment, who will call the device to confirm the emergency.
  3. Panic Button: Located at the bottom of the home screen, this button requires users to hold it down for three seconds to activate. Once activated, police will be dispatched to the user’s location immediately.
