TikTok lays off staff across Africa amid global workforce reduction. Further massive layoffs are expected from TikTok in the third quarter.

After rumors about an upcoming layoff had lingered for nearly a year, lay off over 100 employees amid global world reduction. TikTok sacked many employees from its African subsidiary in June 2024, after announcing mass layoff plans in May. Employees in Nigeria and South Africa were most hit by the massive layoffs, according to reports.

Meanwhile, the social media company reportedly sacked some employees in March, before the announcement in May.

The June layoff impacted more staff members than the March episode, affecting over 100 employees across marketing, content operations, trust and safety teams.

The Chinese short-form video-hosting social media platform announced plans to cut its global workforce, especially those in marketing and operations roles in May. The job cuts are part of the organization’s restructuring efforts, especially members of its global user operations team. Meanwhile, many other TikTok employees will get new departments.

Following the announcement, speculations arose linking the proposed layoffs to ongoing regulatory and political challenges facing the Chinese firm in the United States. Employees, however, have refuted this claim, asserting that the company is only reviewing its operations and making necessary accompanying changes.

TikTok remains only one of several multinational companies (MNCs) reducing its employee base in Africa. Meta and Microsoft have reportedly laid off large swaths of Africa-based employees recently.

As the effects of largest workforce reduction in the social media platform’s history lingers, reports claim that there are yet more TikTok staff layoffs are expected in Q3 2024 amid continuous restructuring efforts by the company.
