Meta has officially introduced the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants, offering a total funding pool of up to $2 million to support organizations around the world, with a particular focus on regions including Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey. This initiative, announced on Tuesday, is designed to encourage innovative proposals from companies utilizing Meta’s Llama AI to address pressing social issues within their communities.

The Llama 3.1 Impact Grants aim to drive progress in various impactful areas, including economic development, scientific research, and public service. Selected applicants could receive grants of up to $500,000, with the winners expected to be announced early next year. The grants are intended to empower organizations to leverage AI technology to create meaningful social change.

Meta’s Vice President of Public Policy for Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey, Kojo Boakye, emphasized that the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants reflect Meta’s dedication to harnessing open-source AI for global benefit. Boakye highlighted that AI has unparalleled potential to enhance human productivity, foster creativity, and improve quality of life, while also accelerating economic growth and advancing medical and scientific research.

The application period for the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants is from August 5, 2024, to November 22, 2024. To be eligible, organizations must be formally established entities rather than individuals or sole proprietorships and must be in good legal standing. Applicants need to appoint a representative who is an employee of or affiliated with the organization and at least 18 years old.

To assist potential applicants, Meta will host a series of regional events, including virtual and in-person hackathons, workshops, and training sessions. These events will be held in numerous locations worldwide, such as Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Korea, Latin America, North America, Pakistan, Singapore, Sub-Saharan Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the UAE, and Vietnam. The sessions are designed to provide technical support and mentorship, and participating organizations may also be eligible for additional awards of up to $100,000.
