The World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) Digital Media Africa Conference will be held in Aga Khan University’s Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC) on September 18 and 19, 2024. The event will feature practical case studies and discussions surrounding evolving digital innovations, boosting revenue generation, and enhancing audience trust.

The World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) advocates for innovation in the media space and press freedom while supporting journalists and publishers with the requisite expertise in the evolving digital landscape. The 2024 edition marks the first in-person edition since Digital Media Africa 2019 and will receive up to 150 participants and speakers from across Africa and Europe.

Kenya’s “Dynamic Media Space” Hosts Continental Media Conference

The event will focus on accelerating digital transformation for African news publishing, addressing potential challenges and opportunities in generating digital revenue, exploring the role of AI in African newsrooms, and securing and growing digital revenue. Panelists will also discuss innovative strategies for engaging younger audiences, navigating the evolving advertising landscape, and building public trust through inclusive leadership.

Organizers link their choice of Nairobi as the host city for this year’s conference to Kenya’s “dynamic media space.” Vincent Peyregne, CEO of the Wan-IFRA, remarks that this conference takes place at a challenging moment for newspaper publishing in the continent.

He notes, “With mounting newsprint and distribution cost pressures, along with print publications downsizing or closing. African publishers must speed up their digital transformation programs.” Peyregne adds that such digital transformations can help the continent’s newsrooms establish a vibrant foundation for generating digital revenue and fulfill their vital social role. Peyregne believes the event “will serve as a catalyst for goodwill and bring new and encouraging opportunities to our African colleagues through increased international collaboration.”

Sponsors and partners for the event include Google News Initiative, WAN-IFRA, Media Development Investment Fund, The Aga Khan University, and Eastern Africa Editors Society. Workshop sessions on the 17th will precede the conference, while interested participants will visit local media companies a day after the event.
